About Ian
Ian Schneller is a nationally recognized cybersecurity and risk executive with more than three decades of experience leading organizations through complex threat environments, large-scale transformation, and high-stakes governance challenges across healthcare, financial services, technology, and government. Over his career, Ian has served at the highest levels of both the public and private sectors, advising boards, CEOs, and senior leadership teams on how to protect enterprise value, enable growth, and build resilient operating models in an era of escalating cyber and digital risk. A seasoned board director himself, Ian blends deep operator experience with strategic, fiduciary oversight, making him a rare and valuable voice in the boardroom.
Ian has held three enterprise Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) roles in multi-billion-dollar organizations, most recently serving as CISO of Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), the largest privately held health insurer in the United States. At HCSC, he elevated cybersecurity to a core business enabler, leading a multi-year transformation that achieved world-class security maturity with zero material breaches and zero regulatory findings, even as peer organizations across the healthcare sector experienced significant cyber incidents. His leadership helped enable consistent multi-billion-dollar annual revenue growth by embedding security into sales, product, and acquisition strategies, strengthening trust with regulators, customers, and partners.
Earlier in his career, Ian served as CISO and Senior Vice President at RealPage and as Senior Vice President of Global Information Security at Bank of America, where he led global cyber strategies for one of the world’s largest financial institutions. At Bank of America, he spearheaded large-scale secure development and DevSecOps initiatives, dramatically improving software quality and productivity while strengthening regulatory and audit outcomes. He also played a central role in coordinating industry-wide and government collaboration to reduce systemic risk to the U.S. financial system.
A trusted advisor to government leaders, Ian previously served as Executive Director of Global Cyber Partnerships and Government Strategy at JPMorgan Chase, where he worked directly with federal agencies, regulators, and policymakers to strengthen national cyber defense. He was a founding member of the Financial Systemic Analysis and Resilience Center (FSARC), a landmark public-private partnership created to protect critical U.S. infrastructure from catastrophic cyber threats.
Before entering the private sector, Ian spent nearly 24 years as a senior officer in the U.S. Air Force, where he held leadership roles across the Pentagon, U.S. Cyber Command, and the National Security Agency. He led large global organizations, governed multi-billion-dollar budgets, and advised the White House and U.S. Congress on national security and cyber risk. His military career was marked by repeated recognition for exceptional leadership and operational excellence, including multiple presidential, congressional, and Department of Defense commendations.
In addition to his executive roles, Ian is an experienced board member and advisor. He currently served on the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Cybersecurity Board Subcommittee, where he helps align cyber strategy across a system serving one in three Americans. He has also served as a board member for Medecision, an advisory board member for Proofpoint, and as Chair of Dallas CISO Inspire, a coalition of senior security leaders focused on collective defense and executive development. Across these roles, Ian is known for bridging governance, technology, and business strategy in a way that is practical, calm, and outcome-driven.
Ian is the first CISO in the history of the ORBIE Awards to receive the national honor previously reserved for CIOs only, reflecting his reputation as both a technical authority and a business-minded leader. He holds advanced degrees in computer science and software engineering, along with numerous certifications in cybersecurity, risk management, and corporate governance, including Wharton’s Corporate Governance program and Qualified Technical Executive (QTE) designation.
Outside of his professional work, Ian is deeply committed to mentorship, leadership development, and service. He enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and two sons and remains actively engaged in efforts to strengthen the next generation of technology and security leaders.
